About

Merzouga Morocco

My name is Maura O’Brien, a professional writer and editor, an amateur photographer, and a lifelong traveler based in Portland, Oregon. The Long Weekender is my travel home—a space to document my most memorable adventures in the United States and abroad, and to (hopefully) help you make the most of your long weekends.

My lasting loves for travel and the great outdoors were born in Marin County, California, followed me to Washington, D.C., in my twenties, and inspired me to decamp to the Pacific Northwest in my early thirties. Along the way, I’ve been grateful to have my work featured by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Condé Nast Traveler, National Journal, Tiny Atlas Quarterly, C-VILLE Weekly, Red Tricycle, and Vacasa.

On this blog, you can expect to find comprehensive three-day guides to some of my most treasured destinations around the world. Where to eat, where to drink, where to hike, where to play, where to save money, where to splurge… it’s all here. And all you need is three days.
